ILO Airport overview
Iloilo International Airport (IATA: ILO, ICAO: RPVI) is the main international airport serving Metro Iloilo–Guimaras, as well as the rest of Iloilo Province in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It is the fifth-busiest airport in the Philippines and is located in the municipality of Cabatuan, Iloilo, approximately 24 kilometers (15 mi) northwest of Iloilo City proper, on a 188-hectare (460-acre) site. The airport opened to commercial traffic on June 14, 2007, after a decade of planning and construction, replacing Mandurriao Airport in Mandurriao, Iloilo City, which had been in operation for over seventy years. Consequently, the new airport inherited its IATA and ICAO airport codes, as well as its position as the fourth-busiest airport in the Philippines from its predecessor. It is the first airport in both Western Visayas and the island of Panay built to international standards, serving as the primary gateway to the region. It is classified as an international airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. Since its opening in 2007, Iloilo International Airport has become one of the largest airports constructed in the Philippines. During the inauguration, former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo described the airport as the most beautiful and modern in the country, calling it a symbol of both political will and economic maturity. It has also been included in the list of 'Best Airports in Asia' by The Guide to Sleeping in Airports, a travel site, for several years.
